Not only is SHOP helping local businesses get started, it’s also a great resource for people on a budget looking to equip their home kitchens. Individuals transitioning from shelters or temporary housing into permanent housing may find themselves trying to outfit a whole apartment with limited funds. SHOP can help reduce those costs dramatically!
What do families on a budget need?
Studies have found that low-income and food-insecure households often lack essential kitchenware when compared to their more secure counterparts. Small food preparation utensils were the most needed, including can openers, sauce pots, cutlery (especially forks), knife sets, cutting boards, measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, vegetable peelers, potato mashers, spatulas, tongs, and whisks.
These items are key to making fresh and healthy food at home, and many of us take a well-stocked kitchen for granted. But for low-income families, missing kitchenware can be a major stumbling block when making meals. San Diego is fortunate to house two fantastic food banks and many small agencies helping food-insecure families, but items from food banks are often fresh or perishable and need to be prepared right away. Families without the right tools to work with the products miss out on being able to use this critical support.
SHOP helps households fill in those gaps in their kitchens for far less cost than new items from retail stores. Plus, by giving these items new lives we help keep them from entering landfills. If you have some of the “most needed items” from above cluttering your cabinets and drawers, consider dropping them off at Kitchens for Good SHOP and helping local families in need.
