Apprentice Celebration June 30, 2023

Kitchens for Good’s summer-time apprentice celebration saw 11 individuals graduate from the full apprenticeship program and 23 students promoted from in-class training to on-the-job training. Our 11 graduates have been working at some of San Diego’s top hotels and restaurants during the past 10+ months while they gained valuable on-the-job training and completed their apprenticeship competency skills. The 23 newly promoted student-apprentices are now moving into their own on-the-job training journeys with Kitchens for Good employer partners all across town.

Apprentices joining the workforce from Kitchens for Good programs are supported during their transition by our in-house staffing agency. These new employees make an average hourly wage of $18-$20+, with top earners making 22% more than the San Diego minimum wage. This increase adds up to an extra $7,696 per year for full-time employment!

Kitchens for Good is proud to have helped these apprentices, and many more like them, develop their passion for culinary, baking, or hospitality careers. We would like to thank the employer partners that make it possible for our apprentices to enter the industry and practice their skills with paid, hands-on training. The Del Mar Racetrack, Veteran’s Village of San Diego, and Blue Bridge Hospitality are all new employer partners who are already making a difference in the lives of our apprentices. Kettner Exchange has been one of our best employer partners and has attained a much-deserved Michelin Bib Gourmand Status for 2023!

The support of our employer partners and community is a key part of our apprentices’ success. If you’d like to see the impact our programs are making in the lives of San Diegans, you can join us at one of our upcoming events. The next apprentice celebration and promotion ceremony will take place on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.

We reserve the first set of seats for apprentices and their families, but if you would like to sign up for the waiting list, we will release seats as they become available. Many other exciting events will be open to the public during this cohort! From brunch at Kitchens for Good to our cake expo competition, there’s an event for everyone (and every food).
